LAGO FAGNANO AND THE RIO
AZOPARDO
Flyfishing the "uttermost part of the Earth"
Lago Fagnano |
This is a unique opportunity to visit one of the wildest
corners of the Earth to fish for rainbows, sea-run browns, and oversized
brook trout. Lago Fagnano, 75 miles long and over 250 meters deep,
is an immense glacial lake surrounded by the Darwin Range in southern
Tierra del Fuego. The western end of the lake is drained by the Rio
Azopardo, our primary fishing interest. We fish the river as well
as the lake and its feeder streams. It is primarily a brook trout
fishery with 3 to 8-pounders common; anglers can also expect to catch
rainbows between 4 and 8 pounds and sea-run browns in the 6 to 12-pound
range.
The Rio Azopardo |
We stay in an estancia with several guest rooms that
have been renovated to accommodate our clients. The estancia and adjacent
cabin are situated on the lake and a feeder stream full of willing
trout.
We
are offering an 8-day program that includes 2 nights camping while
we travel by horse to Lago Fagnano. Guests are met in Punta Arenas
and will spend 2 nights at the Onamonte Lodge on the Rio Grande. We
depart by horse the following day. This is a trip for the adventurous
angler, in search of something more than a stay at a lodge and nice
fishing. Truly a fishing expedition to one of the remote and wild
corners of the Earth.
